The Luther monument in Möhra, the ancestral home of the Luther family

The defining date of the Reformation is considered to be when Luther nailed the theses to the church door on 31 October 1517. It initiated a process of modernisation the effects of which are still reflected today. Germany will be the focal point for Christians from all over the world during the 500th anniversary of this event in 2017.

The LUTHER DECADE from 2008-2017 is to connect a historical retrospective with a view to the future, bringing to life authentic sites of the Reformation, highlighting the life and work of Luther and important contemporaries while examining the events of the 15th and 16th centuries.

2012: Reformation and Music

The Reformation laid the foundations for European music culture – from congregational singing to music in the home. This is demonstrated by composers such as Bach, Schütz, Telemann and Händel, and also the Leipzig Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Choir) which celebrates its 800th anniversary in 2012. It is important to keep this rich tradition alive and explore new avenues.

Bach meets Luther

Thuringia invites you to discover the harmonious relationship between the reformation and music in 2012. The fifth year of the Luther decade pays particular attention to the subject of music at the time of the reformation, Luther’s view of church music and prominent “successors” such as Johann Sebastian Bach or Heinrich Schütz.
